Skill 1 : Passing with 2 touches maximum

The first non-negotiable needed to play professionally is mastering the ability to play 1 or 2 touch football. In a professional match, most players make quick 1-2 touch passes in order to maximize speed of play and destabilize the opposition. This skill requires mastering your first touch to control the ball and your pass accuracy to find an open teammate. The higher the level, the better your touch and quick passing needs to be. To improve this skill, find a wall and hit the ball as hard as you can against it while controlling the rebound. You can also perform different high speed passing variations with some friends.

Skill 2: Fitness

Once you are becoming more confident with your 2 touch passing, you can begin to increase your fitness levels. To play professionally you need elite fitness levels which can only be obtained through sport specific exercises and lots of match experience. One mistake that needs to be avoided is thinking you will improve your fitness by running at a constant speed. To improve your soccer stamina you must look to recreate the type of running you perform in a match. This is why interval training and tempo runs are much better alternatives.

Skill 3: Master one position specific skill

With a good first touch and a solid fitness foundation, it is now important to think what area of your game sets you apart from others. Scouts look for players that have something unique, a so-called spark. Think of your position on the pitch and pick one related skill that you will master. It could be your ability to win headers as a center back or your accuracy in switching the play as a midfielder. Find that skill and make sure you become the absolute best at it. When you do, people will take notice.

Final Whistle

There you have it, 3 skills that if mastered will propel you to football superstardom. The key word here is mastery, a concept that can only be achieved through thousands of hours of training. So what are you waiting for? Grab a ball and go out to train individually or with some friends. Get very focused with your training plan and you will see results like never before. You know what it takes to make it, now you need to execute the plan.
